AI Usage Policy
Geospasial: Jurnal Geografi recognizes the expanding role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in academic research. Authors must adhere to the following guidelines to ensure transparency, accountability, and ethical integrity when using AI tools in manuscript preparation.
Permitted Uses of AI
- Language & Editorial Support: Authors may use AI tools for basic manuscript editing, including grammar correction, stylistic improvement, and template formatting to enhance readability.
- Analytical & Processing Assistance: The use of AI tools for data analysis, code generation, or spatial modeling support is permitted, provided the specific methodologies, algorithms, and applications are transparently explained in the Methods section.
Prohibited Uses of AI
- Generative Authorship: AI tools must not be used to draft primary text, literature reviews, research interpretations, or entire manuscripts in a manner that replaces the author's intellectual contribution.
- Data & Image Falsification: Authors are strictly prohibited from using AI to fabricate synthetic data, falsify results, or manipulate cartographic images, maps, and spatial datasets.
- Ineligible Authorship: AI software or Large Language Models (LLMs) cannot be named as an author or co-author on any submission.
AI Disclosure Requirement
- Authors must explicitly disclose the use of AI tools upon initial manuscript submission.
- An AI Usage Statement must be included in the Methods or Acknowledgments section of the manuscript.
- Sample Statement: "The authors used [Name of Tool/Software, Version] to assist with [language refinement / grammar correction / data processing workflows]. The entire analytical process and text were carried out under the full supervision and evaluation of the authors, who assume complete accountability for all content, interpretations, and conclusions presented."
Transparency & Verification Procedures
- Scientific Integrity: All data, spatial datasets, and analyses generated or processed with AI assistance must remain fully verifiable and reproducible.
- Editorial Auditing: The Editorial Board verifies AI disclosures during initial desk reviews. If concerns arise regarding manuscript authenticity or data integrity, editors reserve the right to request supporting documentation, including raw GIS datasets, revision history, and AI prompt/usage logs.
Editorial Procedures in Verifying AI Use
- The editorial team will check whether the author has explicitly stated the use of AI at the time of manuscript submission, either through the submission form or in the methods or acknowledgements section;
- The editorial team will also assess the appropriateness of AI use in accordance with journal policies, including ensuring that AI is not used for primary writing or data fabrication;
- If there are doubts about the authenticity or integrity of the manuscript, the editor reserves the right to request additional documents, such as revision history, AI usage logs, or raw data, for further evaluation.
Penalties for Non-Compliance
Failure to disclose AI usage or the improper application of AI tools (including AI-driven data fabrication or plagiarism) constitutes serious academic misconduct. Confirmed violations will lead to immediate desk rejection, formal post-publication retraction, and potential escalation to the authors' affiliated institutions.
